The Children’s Assessment Center hosted its 17th Annual Spirit of Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at the Royal Sonesta. This year’s program dformer Miss America Marilyn Van Derbur, a survivor of child sexual abuse, who has devoted much of her adult life to raising national awareness and understanding of sexual abuse and its long-term effects. She has received numerous awards and acknowledgments for her work, including being the first woman to be given the highest speaking award possible by the National Speakers Association. In 1989 her family funded an adult incest survivor program in Denver, and in 1993 she co-founded two national not-for-profit organizations dedicated to public education and strengthening laws protecting victims of sexual abuse. In addition, Mark Wallace, President and Chief Executive Officer of Texas Children’s Hospital, was honored for his outstanding work in making a difference in the lives of children.
This year’s signature underwriter was Neiman Marcus and underwriters included: Leslie Alexander & The Houston Rockets, Kelley & Stephen Lubanko, H-E-B, The Robert and Janice McNair Foundation, Texas Children’s Hospital, and Kelli & John Weinzierl. Dominique Sachse served as Mistress of Ceremonies.
Funds raised at this event will support direct service programs that The CAC offers such as forensic interviews, medical, and therapy services which are critical to the hope and healing of young victims of sexual abuse.
